One of the most common basic emotions that is always present in trauma healing work is fear.
Fear is an emotion essential to survival. It protects, alerts and mobilizes us. But when it cannot be welcomed or “completed” with a correspondent action it transforms into a persistent state of alert in the body, like an alarm that cannot be turned off.
This cycle keeps repeating itself, playing up repeatedly in unexpected ways.
The body has its own memories. They are not just psychological, they are somatic.
This somatic memory can be triggered even long after a highly stressful and/or traumatic event, perpetuating feelings of fear that cannot be resolved with conventional methods.
That’s why if we aim to really resolve our “psychological hang ups” we also need to address emotions. This can only be done through the body, as emotions can only be experienced in the body.
A somatic approach, especially the ones I use, acts directly on bodily memories to help the body release this burden and regain its capacity for self-regulation.
